ABIGAIL

We brush our teeth and lie down. Noah reaches behind us to dim the lantern. I stare at the tent above me, Noah’s body pressed to mine. His warmth sends waves of shivers across my body.

I curl my toes, then kick at the bag to cover my feet better. My left foot slips through one slit, the cold air kissing my skin.

A hiss mixed with a chuckle spills past my lips. “Damn it.” Thank you, bear. Now I’ll freeze a foot off.

“What’s wrong?” Noah asks, his silhouette rising in the dark.

“Nothing. I just found a hole in the sleeping bag, that’s all.” And I can’t help but laugh.

Noah laughs, too, but the sound is odd, strained. He shifts, turning sideways, his hand landing on my hip. A jolt of awareness races to my core.

“Scoot closer.” He tugs me to his body.

My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. Noah slips his arm under my head and I turn to my side. Our chests brush together, inches apart. My heart hammers in my throat.

His scent inebriates me. My head goes light, my cheek burning when it touches his skin.

We face each other in the dim light, listening to the hypnotic patter of raindrops on the nylon walls. Noah’s hand is still on my hip, searing into my flesh through my clothes.

“What are you going to do with your pictures?” he asks, his voice honey.

I lick my lips. His gaze follows the path my tongue traces. “Maybe send to some magazines? There are several that specialize in nature photography.”

Noah nods. “So, no social media?”

My lips curl up. “Not in the way you imagine. I have no intentions of becoming a travel influencer or something like that.”

Noah gazes into my eyes and it’s like he sees through me, into me. “I believe in you.”

We argued, and we bantered and we insulted each other. Now, Noah tells me he trusts me.

It’s fragile and new, this trust. Something surges inside my chest. “I promise you, Noah. I won’t disappoint you.”

Noah cracks up, the sound rich and velvety against my face. He braces himself on one elbow, leaning towards me. The air crackles with electricity as the lantern light hits the intensity on his green eyes.

He reaches out, rough fingers brushing along my cheek. “You never cease to amaze me, sunshine.”

“Is that so?” I tease, trying to mask the thunderous pounding of my heart with a coy smile. The nickname is soft this time, intimate.

He nods, not breaking eye contact. “You infuriate me sometimes, but you also impress me with your resilience and brightness.” As he speaks, his words wrap around me like a warm embrace, making my skin tingle with anticipation.

I swallow hard, searching for something clever to say, but all I manage is a breathless, “Really?”

My pulse races. Noah nods once, solemnly, his face contemplative. I part my lips, aching to break the silence.

It’s like I’ve been submerged in a pool of molten honey, the sweetness of him warming every inch of my body.
